Outcome Based Pedagogic Principles for Effective Teaching Learning

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering, ABES Engineering College, Ghaziabad has conducted one-week FDP on “Outcome Based Pedagogic Principle for Effective Teaching & Learning” from 22^nd April – 26^th April 2019. The inaugural session was graced by Prof. Dr. Kishore, as chief guest and Prof Dr. Vinod K. Shanwal., Prof (Dr.) Vijay Anant Athavale, Director, ABESEC, Prof (Dr.) Shailesh Tiwari, Head, CS Dept. and other distinguished guests from research and academics started the programme on 22nd April 2019. Prof. Kishore described explicitly the necessity of outcome based education and How it is required to adopt the methodologies and techniques for effective teaching. Various eminent speakers from different reputed institutions delivered talk to make teaching learning process more comprehensible, focused and result oriented. Faculties working in different institutions affiliated from AKTU were invited to get benefit from this golden opportunity.

Around 50 faculty members participated from different organizations with great zeal and passion. They learned different aspects of outcome based education like innovative methods of teaching and research, outcome based education: opportunities and challenges, faculty contribution in outcome based education etc. The eminent speakers defined very well the methods to enhance the learning of students in every course. They completely explained the need of research and development activities, practical exposure of students, use of different methods of teaching like power point presentation (ppt), videos, working models etc. They advised the faculties to be aware of latest tools, techniques, and working procedures and initiate industry oriented projects to be handled by students. The participants actively participated in all sessions. They asked questions and got valuable and satisfactory answers from eminent speakers. Speakers of the FDP discussed in detail, how to write CO, mapping of CO –PO and PO attainment calculation. Documentation process and their presentation during inspection has been also presented in this FDP.

Day 1 (22/04/2019)

Dr. Kishore started his talk from the gaps in the traditional education system and discussed the examples need to adapt to make better education. In his talk, He discussed some of the common issues in existing education system, and put light on the solutions and the methods to deal with. Dr. Kishore beautifully decorated the words of mouth and given examples to deal with naughty students in class.

Dr. Shanwal took session 2. Dr. Shanwal discussed the methods of teaching in the 21st century. He discussed Bloom’s taxonomy. He added that Bloom’s taxonomy is a set of three hierarchical models used to classify educational learning objectives into levels of complexity and specificity. The three lists cover the learning objectives in cognitive, effective and sensory domains. The cognitive domain list has been the primary focus of most traditional education and is frequently used to structure curriculum learning objectives, assessments and activities. He also explained all phases with example.

In-house Professor Dr. Hemant Ahuja took the third session.Dr. Ahuja delivered the talk on the curriculum design which inculcate the outcomes of the topic and hands-on session. He explained the role of effective curriculum designing in the effective teaching by teachers and effective learning by students.

Day 2 (23/04/2019)

Dr. Sahoo delivered the first talk. Dr. Anita Sahoo started her talk from the difference between outcome and objective. The course should be taught by focusing on both terms and evaluation is to be done on the same. Dr. Sahoo has vast experience in this field and discussed various scenarios and examples of Outcome-based learning. Crisp of the session was “Outcome–based education (OBE) is an educational theory that bases each part of an educational system around goals (outcomes). By the end of the educational experience, each student should have achieved the goal.”

Dr. Deepti discussed the on-going practices on her institute and what are the issues and how it can be solved. Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is a student-centric learning model that helps teachers to plan the course delivery and assessment with the endpoint in mind. Let me provide an example to make it simpler.  For example –  A candidate is required to satisfy a particular set of criteria (Program outcome) at the end of a program, say Mechanical Engineering.  This is intimated to the curriculum development team at institutions before they create the curriculum for each program and course.  So the teacher keeps in mind the end point (outcomes) when he/she designs the curriculum (while planning lessons, designing assignment & assessments, lecturing and other activities).  Everything a teacher does in the classroom should ultimately lead the student toward the outcomes of the course.

Prof Santosh took post Lunch session; he showed the importance of mapping in assessment and outcomes. He explained the mapping process and the attainment of the PO. Dr. Santosh, first clarifies the terminologies like, CO, PO, PEO and its importance. Further he proceeded to the attainment of Mission and Vision using the key attributes. The mapping is the process of attainment of Mission and Vision.

Dr. Ansari focused on the NBA process and what accreditation means. What are the key parameters for evaluation by an agency for evaluating an institute? The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) is one of the two major bodies responsible for accreditation of higher education institutions in India, along with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). NBA accredits technical programmes, such engineering and management programmes, while NAAC accredits general colleges and universities. NBA is a full member of the Washington Accord. He put light on the NBA Process and the key areas what NBA is expecting.

In session 2, Dr. Sinha explained the process followed in the department and how useful it is, for the course and curriculum. Teacher Education provides a platform to student-teachers to acquire the required knowledge, skill and develop positive attitude, values and beliefs. This can be done with the help of the provided curriculum. And the quality of teacher produced in any institution invariably depends on the curriculum offered to them during their training period. After reviewing various researches on the curriculum and significant role of teachers’ in framing the curriculum the process of curriculum development was decentralized. The process of curriculum framing and preparation of textbooks be decentralized so as to increase teachers’ involvement in these tasks.

Dr. Gaurav Dubey took the last session. Dr. Dubey discussed the graduate attributes and the PEO of the curriculum. Dr. Dubey said about the Active learning Strategies and the pedagogical perspective. He discussed ” Active Learning Strategies help to initiate learners and faculty into effective ways to help learners engage in activities based on ideas about how people learn. Multiple active learning strategies may be used in each of the active learning designs. Here’s an annotated list of active learning strategies.

Day 4 (25/04/2019)

The day was started from the talk by Prof. Mohit Bansal of G.L. Bajaj College. Dr. Bansal discussed the learning styles. He explained well about active and passive learning styles. Some examples were also given in the session about styles. He discussed the methods : “Think-Pair-Share”, Turn and Talk approach, Polling, Tests/Quizs, Jigsaws, Pausing in Lecture, etc.

In second session of Dr. B.P. Sharma, Dr. Sharma added the comments in previous sessions. Use of effective learning is very important in outcome based pedagogic principles. He discussed following points:

2. Encourages risk taking
3. Requires student preparation

Dr. Neeraj encouraged the audience and performed a verbal exercise on learning styles. He gave the examples on different learning style and the applications.While taking a query from audience, He explained the hierarchy of Vision, Mission, Outcome, Objective and terms like CO, PO, PSO.

Day 5 (26/04/2019)

Dr. Sunita Tiwari has taken the first session of the day on Curriculum Design. She explained the importance of curriculum designing and what basic mistakes we do in designing. She gave us an idea to do focus on designing and then evaluation and assessment methods.

Second session was taken by Prof. Gajendra Singh. Prof. Singh talk about so many mythological examples and GURU- SHISHYA Parampara and how the teaching is done in ancient times. He also added the role of Values in students and how important it is for student to serve society and work for society with engineering solutions.

Last Session was based on CO assessment and attainment. Dr. Anu Chaudhary discussed about the academic points where the improvements are required.  He discussed about internal assessment tests and Final exams. As per  OBE, each question in the internal tests and final exams allows the teacher to measure a particular CO/Action Verb of student performance and hence the performance of students in each question must be monitored to measure the attainment of CO.
