KIET School of Management (MBA) department of KIET Group of Institutions has conducted a Five days Faculty Development Program on  “Blooms Taxonomy- An Approach Towards Outcome Based Technical Education”

Bloom’s taxonomy is extremely important in the context of education because it tells teachers a great deal about the order in which they must teach so that they can get their students to succeed in higher level thinking. The framework elaborated by Bloom and his collaborators consisted of six major categories: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation.

The Faculty Development Program was designed for teachers and researchers working in university affiliated colleges. The five days FDP has covered various aspects of teaching pedagogy.

Day 1: Monday; 10th June 2019

Inauguration

 The FDP was inaugurated by Prof. Amandeep Kaur, Senior Coordinator, NITTTR alomg with the Director of the Institute Dr. (Col) A Garg, Dr. KR Chaturvedi, HoD- MBA, Dr. Anil Ahlawat, Dean- Academic and other fubntional heads of the instituire.
 Best wishes were given by all the dignitaries for successful conduct of the FDP

Session 1: Introduction to the Course

 Session conducted by Prof. Amandeep Kaur, NITTTR. She helped participants to understand the significance of attending this FDP.

Session 2 & 3 : Writing Learning Outcomes (Bloom’s taxonomy) / Task on Writing Learning Outcomes

 Prof Amandeep Kaur, NITTTR Chandigarh gave insights into learning outcomes which we all as teachers need to inculcate so that our students get benefitted beyond our subject expertise. Learning outcomes are the statements of what is expected from the students as a result of learning activity. Characteristics of learning outcomes are specific, measurable, achievable, and realistic and time framed. Highlights was given on Blooms Classification in which it was discussed that learning may fall in any of the domains like; cognitive, psychomotor and affective domain. The levels of Bloom were discussed under cognitive domain includes Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. In Psychomotor Domain, those learning outcomes are discussed which change the ability to perform. Five different levels of outcomes in this domain are Imitation, Manipulation, Precision, Articulation and Naturalization. The third type, affective domain includes entire outcome which are not related to bring changes in the attitude of the students. These are Receiving, Responding, Valuing, Organizing, Characterizing.

 The task was assigned to the participants to identify the verbs related blooms which can be used in the question paper.

Day 2: Tuesday; 11th June 2019

Session 1, 2 & 3 : Blended Learning, Task on Blended Learning & Digital Pedagogy and Effective Assessment

 Dr Srinivasa KG, Professor, NITTTR, Chandigarh wonderfully explained how we can use technology to make our lectures more effective.
 Types of online certification and courses for students and teachers.
 We also learnt how government is concerned with the skills updating of not only the students but teachers also.
 The session gave an opportunity to know about various softwares available to enhance conventional teaching methods with video lectures, animations, graphics, editing etc.
 Guidelines to participate in MOOC were also the point of discussion.
 Difference between knowledge, intelligence and activating wisdom was also discussed.
 Role of teachers in institutional ranking was also discussed in the session
 3 E’s of teaching were discussed: Expectation, experience & Evaluation.
 3 V’s of effective communication: Verbal , Vocal & visual.
 Methods of learning’s was also discussed like verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, visual, interpersonal, musical .

Day 3: Wednesday; 12th June 2019

Session 1, 2 & 3 : Planning Organizing and Assessment of Practical Work, Writing Test Items, Setting Question Paper and Task

 Dr. Sunil Dutt. Prof and Head Eductaion Department in NITTTR, Chandigarh was the resource person for this day. He started the session with the four different types of practical works i.e. experiences, exercises, investigations and demonstrations. The main purpose of practical work is to make phenomenon more real, to maintain interest, to develop an ability to cooperate, to promote logical and reasoning methods and for finding new solutions. He focused that planning s an essential ingredient of a practical work. He said that practical work is not inherently good unless included in the course for clear purpose. While planning the practical work, the points to be considered are purpose or objective, the place of practical work within the curriculum and role of teachers and students.

 The second session was also taken by Dr. Dutt in which he discussed that a test is usually the answer of the question how well the student performed in comparison with others. Thus a written test is an important technique of assessment. The different types of test items are selection type tests, supply type tests, short answer type test, essay type test, multiple choice type test etc. The guidelines were provided to the faculty members for preparing the question paper to assess the students.

 The task was assigned to the faculty members to set the question paper on the basis of Bloom’s taxonomy and to assess the validity, reliability and usability.

Day 4: Thursday; 13th June 2019

Session 1& 2: Planning for Effective Instruction and Design of Rubric

 The speaker highlighted that in the traditional style of teaching, more emphasis was on development of knowledge in learners and less attention was paid to the development of skills and attitudes, so the main focus of this speaker was to design the lessons in such a way that behind the theoretical concepts the students should have some practical implacability also. She also suggested that teachers should arrange instructional events in such a way that appropriate learning is facilitated and for that planning classroom instruction is essential for classroom teaching. She told the importance of lesson plan, its pre requisite, components and formats. Task to design lesson plan of their specific specialization was given to the participants.

 Another session on Rubrics was also taken by this speaker. She told that Rubrics are performance based assessment which evaluates the performance of students on any set of tasks and finally leads to learning outcomes. Rubric divides the work into parts and provides clear description of characteristics of the works associated with each part. Her highlights were uses of Rubrics, different types of Rubrics like Holistic, Description Type, General Type and Task Specific. She also told faculties how to create steps or developing effective Rubrics. In the end she concluded with the words that Successful teaching is the result of Competent Planning and Preparations and Rubrics helps to set well defined standards.

Session 3: Guidance and Counseling

 Dr. Amita Dev, Pro Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW) was an inspiration for all the participants. She highlighted that the purpose of any education system is not only to develop academic learning’s but also the overall development of students. For this it is necessary to focus on Socio effective Development i.e. Self reliance, self discipline, and taking initiative, independence of thoughts, understanding relationships between environments and the people and responsible actions. The main aim of education is to promote optimal development in students in all spheres like: Education, Vocational, Personal, Social, Moral, Physical etc. She also focused on Guidance which helps the students to determine the courses most appropriate to their needs and abilities.

 Counseling is a process in which the counselor assesses the counselee to make interpretation of facts. This was very rightly explained by the respected Madam. She also highlighted the functions of Guidance and Counseling like: Adjustmental Counseling, Oriental Counseling and Development Counseling

Day 5: Friday, 14th June 2019

Session 1: Developing Creativity

 Prof. Charu Verma, Corporate Trainer, was the living encyclopedia and bundle of energy, wonderfully explained how learning in next decades will be outcome focused not only knowledge and skills. She discussed ccreativity is the ability to transfer traditional ideas rules patterns and relationships into new ideas forms methods and interpretations. She also told that in Engineering, Creativity is the ability to challenge assumptions, breakdown boundaries and recognize new ways to make new connections and new methods to deal with the problems. Her main focus was on creativity and thinking process in which she discussed convergent thinking and divergent thinking. She also highlighted the process of developing creativity in the classrooms by asking more and more questions from students, offer leading questions as focal points for brainstorming sessions and reward new ideas to encourage the students.

Session 2: Emotional Intelligence

 Prof Charu Verma explained that Emotional Intelligence is the strongest predictor of performance and success. She discussed about the EI framework and told Mayer and Solvey Method, GoleMan and Davies Model, Bar On’s Model to understand Emotional Intelligence. She correlated EI and leadership, EI and work place and EI and Stress.

Session 3: Presentation by Participants and Valedictory

 The learning from the FDP was shared at length by the participants.
